How to select Active Tab & Close Tabs on student Chromebooks

Dyknow’s monitoring feature enables Teachers to view all open website tabs on student Chromebook devices, select a background website tab to be the active tab, and even close website tabs on student Chromebook devices during a monitoring session.

This document is a resource for Dyknow Teachers to understand how to:

 

VIEW ALL OPEN TABS ON A STUDENT CHROMEBOOK

Follow the steps below to view all open website tabs on a student Chromebook device during an active monitoring session.

1. Login to Dyknow.

2. Click Start Monitoring for the relevant Class; your monitoring session will begin immediately.

3. Hover your mouse over the desired student device thumbnail (while in grid view), and click the blue expand button to bring that student device thumbnail into big view.

4. Review the open website tabs that are listed horizontally across the screen, just above the student device thumbnail. The Active website tab is identified first, then the Background tabs.

5. If the student has more website tabs open than can fit on the horizontal list, click More to reveal the list of the remaining open tabs.

Note: Any Background tabs playing audio will be tagged with the audio icon.

SELECT THE ACTIVE TAB ON A STUDENT CHROMEBOOK

Follow the steps below to select the Active website tab from the list of Background website tabs open on a student Chromebook device during an active monitoring session.

1. Login to Dyknow.

2. Click Start Monitoring for the relevant Class; your monitoring session will begin immediately.

3. Hover your mouse over the desired student device thumbnail (while in grid view), and click the blue expand button to bring that student device thumbnail into big view.

4. From the list of Background tabs, click to select the tab you wish to become the Active tab.

Note:

  • The selected tab will immediately become the Active tab for the student, who does not receive a notification.
  • If a student shows more than one Active tab, this indicates the student has multiple windows open.

 

CLOSE TABS ON A STUDENT CHROMEBOOK

Follow the steps below to close out website tabs on a student Chromebook device during an active monitoring session.

1. Log in to Dyknow.

2. Click Start Monitoring for the relevant Class; your monitoring session will begin immediately.

3. Hover your mouse over the desired student device thumbnail (while in grid view), and click the blue expand button to bring that student device thumbnail into big view.

4. Locate the tab you wish to close out, from the list of Active and Background tabs open on the student device.

5. Click the X icon associated with that tab to close it on the student’s device.

Note:

  • The tab will immediately disappear for the student, who does not receive a notification.
  • Closing a tab is counted as a Distraction Defeated under the Blocked tab in the resulting Class History data.
