Filter - How to Block Google Doodles

Overview

Google Doodles often appear on the Google homepage and can lead students to interactive games or non-instructional content. To prevent this, you can block Doodles through both the Blocked Keywords and Blocked Search Terms features in Securly Filter.

Steps to Block Google Doodles

  1. Log in to your Securly Filter admin portal.

  2. Navigate to Policy Editor.

  3. Select your custom policy (for example, Students).

  4. Go to the Allow/Block tab.

  5. In the URL section, type: doodles

  6. Click Block to add it as a keyword block.

    1. You’ll now see doodles listed under the Blocked column.

  7. Click Search terms at the top of the page.

  8. In the field labeled Add a keyword, type: doodles

  9. Click the three dots (…) to the right of the entry.

  10. Select Contains from the list.

  11. Click Block.

  12. You’ll now see doodles listed under the Blocked column with the Contains match type.

What This Does

The Keyword Block prevents students from loading URLs containing “doodles,” including https://www.google.com/doodles.

The Search Term Block ensures that any Google search containing the word “doodles” is blocked before results appear.

Together, these two entries fully block access to Google Doodles and related searches.

Notes

Blocking doodles does not affect access to core Google services such as Classroom, Drive, or Gmail.

Allow a few minutes for changes to sync before testing.

To confirm, test from a student device by visiting https://www.google.com/doodles or searching “Google Doodles.”
