Filter - How do I test Securly Filter for Windows devices?

Before you undertake a full deployment of Securly’s filtering solution, it is recommended that you test it on a few machines. This will allow you to understand how Securly’s filtering works and customize policies before pushing it out to all users.

To test Securly:

  1. Install the Securly certificate and trust it on your Windows device. Download the certificate here.
  2. After this, we will need to change the DNS IP addresses for the machine. The first step is finding which ones you need. You can find your DNS IP's in your filtering console under "settings."
  3. Once you have those DNS addresses you will want to open  your "Network & Internet" tab via settings on the windows device. From here you can click on "Properties" which will take you to your network options.
  4. Once you have opened the network options find "DNS Server Assignment" and click the EDIT button. Change the next text box from "Automatic" to "Manual" and then switch on IPv4. Once this is done, add your IP addresses from step 2 into the "preferred DNS" field, and the "Alternate DNS" field.
  5. You can now visit different websites to verify if filtering is working. We recommend visiting ‘unsafewebsite.com’ (this is Securly’s test site), ‘777.com’, and Google search for proxy.
  6. Log in to your Securly portal and navigate to the ‘Reports’ tab. A log of your activities will be listed there. To learn more about the Reports tab, click here.
  7. Once you are done testing make sure to remove the DNS IP and certificate to end the testing process completely.
