How does class history work in Dyknow Classroom?

Dyknow's Class History feature enables Dyknow Teachers to:

• Review all monitored student device activity from the beginning of school;
• Track the number of distractions defeated with Dyknow throughout the year;
• Help build and enhance their Blocking Plans;
• Learn more about students;
• Help with grading; and,
• Share the data with students and/or parents.

Student device activity is automatically being collected during monitoring sessions – it begins as soon as a Dyknow Teacher clicks the Start Monitoring button and stops when he/she clicks the End Monitoring button. Each website visited and application used by monitored students is stored in Class History, as long as the class itself still exists in Dyknow (whether as a Current or Previous Class).

When a Dyknow Teacher clicks the End Monitoring button to end a monitoring session, he/she will be redirected automatically to the Class History page to review the monitored student device activity history for that class.

REVIEW CLASS HISTORY DATA

Follow the instructions below to review Dyknow Class History data for monitored student device activity in your assigned classes.

1. Log in to Dyknow and locate your My Classes dashboard.

2. Navigate to your Class History in either of the following ways:

• Option 1: Click the Class History tab.

• Option 2: Click the View Class History hyperlink for the class you want to review.

You will be redirected to the Class History page.

3. Click to select the tab for the Class whose Class History you want to review.

4. Edit the Class History data set, if needed:

• By student
  • To view Class History data for an individual student within a Class, click the Students menu and select the name of that student.
  • To see which students viewed a particular website or application, click the associated blue people icon ; the resulting list of student names is also hyperlinked! If you click an individual student's name, you will immediately see their personal Class History data.
• By date (range)
  • To view Class History data for a specific date (range), click the Date menu and either select one of the pre-set date range options or set your own Custom Range.
  • To select only one day, just double-click that date!
• By activity (type)
  • To view Class History data for a specific website or application, click the Activity menu and select the desired website URL or application name.
  • To view Class History data for a specific activity type, click the Activity menu and select either All Websites or All Applications.
  • To view Class History data for allowed activity, click the Allowed button.
  • To view Class History data for blocked activity, click the Blocked button.

5. Click the Print button to either:

• Option 1: Save as a PDF
  • Save this particular data set so you can share it with others (e.g. via email) or print it out later
• Option 2: Print this particular data set
  • Print out this particular data set so you can physically share it with others

LEVERAGE CLASS HISTORY DATA

Below are a few tips based on real Dyknow Teacher feedback and how they use their Class History data.

1. Just "Start and Stop."

We encourage Teachers who are new to Dyknow to simply "start and stop" monitoring their first few Classes (without enforcing a Blocking Plan), and then viewing Class History to see what happened during that Class time. This approach often provides a great baseline of reporting for how students are spending their time, without a Dyknow Blocking Plan in place, and makes creating a Blocking Plan for the first time that much easier.

2. Find new resources.

Dyknow Teachers often review Class History data to look for new resources with which they were previously unfamiliar. One Dyknow Teacher told us that she found students were using sites such as Khan Academy during Class, and when she followed up, they admitted they were lost and needed extra help, but were afraid to ask. This Teacher now uses Khan Academy as part of her lesson plans, because she learned the students enjoy and prefer using it as a self-help tool.

3. Parent-Teacher Conferences.

Dyknow Class History per student can be incredibly useful during parent conferences. Dyknow Teachers can use the Class History data to highlight a student's great work and the resources they're using during Class time. The data can also be an objective measurement to show growth! For example, at the beginning of a period of time, the student trended toward off-task behaviors, and their grades suffered; but at the end of the period, the student's behavior aligned with on-task efforts, and their grades have improved.

4. Share with other faculty.

If a student is struggling in one of your Classes, try sharing their data with another Dyknow Teacher to compare notes. How is the student spending his or her time in your Class compared to other Teachers' Classes? What type(s) of Blocking Plans are being enforced by other Teachers?

5. Share with your Students.

One of the most effective influences on behavior is understanding perception versus reality. It's hard to argue with data: if a student seems unaware of how they're spending their Class time, and how that may be impacting their grades or their peers, share their own Class History data in a conference with them and discuss how that data may be affecting their work.
