Why do I get the "New Tab and chrome:// sites cannot be viewed" message?

New Tab and chrome:// sites cannot be viewed."

During a monitoring session, this message will appear on the thumbnail for a student Chromebook device when that student is viewing either:

  • a new tab in the Google Chrome browser
  • any chrome:// link (e.g. chrome://settings, chrome://about, chrome://extensions, etc.)

WHY CAN'T I MONITOR A NEW TAB OR CHROME:// SITES ON STUDENT CHROMEBOOKS?

Google Chromebooks and the Chrome operating system (OS) have specific requirements about sharing a student's screen. Specifically, Dyknow is restricted from capturing a screenshot of a Chromebook New Tab window and any chrome:// websites.

While Dyknow cannot share the current screen, you can still learn what the student is doing by viewing the Activity Tracker (grid view) or Current Activity (big view). Additionally, this activity is saved in Class History for later review.
