How do I determine which YouTube settings apply to my students' devices?

There are multiple ways that YouTube Restricted Mode can be implemented for students - settings in Securly Filter, Google Workspace, and YouTube. The various settings impact how YouTube is consumed by your students. Here are some pointers to help you determine which settings govern your students’ YouTube experience at different times.

1. If the user is not logged into YouTube, the Securly Filter settings will take precedence over the Google Workspace settings.

2. If the user is logged into YouTube, the Google Workspace settings will take precedence over the Securly Filter settings. Even when certain videos are added to the Global Allow list or policy level Allow list, the Google Workspace settings will take precedence in this scenario.

The following table covers the most common scenarios in the case of #1 and #2:

There are certain special settings that could, however, impact users’ YouTube access in addition to scenarios #1 and #2.

3. If “Content Settings” are turned off in Google Workspace settings, then Securly Filter settings will take precedence over the Google Workspace settings.

4. If the “Restricted mode for YouTube” settings under “Safe Search and Restricted Mode” in Google Workspace are set to “Enforce strict restricted mode on YouTube”, then these YouTube settings will take precedence over both Google Workspace Youtube permissions and Securly settings.
