If you see the Connect to iTunes screen on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, learn what to do.

Restart your device

If you see the Connect to iTunes screen, restart your device:

  • On an iPhone X or later, or iPhone 8 or later: Press and quickly release the Volume Up button. Press and quickly release the Volume Down button. Then, press and hold the Side button until you see the Apple logo.
  • On an iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus: Press and hold both the Side and Volume Down buttons for at least 10 seconds, until you see the Apple logo.
  • On an iPhone 6s or earlier, iPad, or iPod touch: Press and hold both the Home and Top (or Side) buttons for at least 10 seconds, until you see the Apple logo.
  • On an iPad Pro 11-inch or iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd generation): Press and quickly release the Volume Up button. Press and quickly release the Volume Down button. Then, press and hold the Top button for at least 10 seconds until you see the Apple logo.

Reinstall iOS

If you still see the Connect to iTunes screen after you restart, you will need to reinstall iOS:

  1. Make sure that you're using the latest version of iTunes.
    1. Make sure the Apple Configurator is closed.
  2. Connect your device to your computer using the cable that came with your device. You should see this message: "There's a problem with the iPhone [your device name] that requires it to be updated or restored."                                 
  3. Accept Terms of Service and License agreement
  4. Click Update (Not Restore) to reinstall iOS and keep your personal data.
    1. For testing devices do a restore.
