Ohio S.B. 29 Impact on Securly Products

Ohio's S.B. 29 addresses concerns about the misuse of student data and undisclosed surveillance through school devices. It mandates data collection transparency, prohibits non-educational data use, and includes requirements for data deletion and breach notifications. Generally, schools cannot monitor students outside school hours, except for specific purposes like educational support, device location, safety threats, and compliance with funding programs.

Securly provides K-12 safety solutions to keep students safe and ready to learn. After reviewing S.B. 29, we found that it does not apply to the following Securly products:

  • Observe: Used by teachers for their own observations, not for monitoring students’ online activities.
  • Pass: Manages hall passes without monitoring students’ online behaviors.
  • Flex: Manages student scheduling, not monitoring online behaviors.
  • MDM: Manages app approval and access without collecting student interaction data.
  • Rhithm: Engages students with questions, not passive monitoring.

S.B. 29 allows monitoring for:

  • Non-commercial educational purposes (instruction, technical support, exam proctoring)
  • Locating lost or stolen devices
  • Responding to threats to life or safety
  • Participation in federal/state funding programs

Securly's products comply with these exceptions:

  • Securly Classroom: Enhances instruction, covered by educational purpose exceptions.
  • Securly Filter: Blocks harmful content and identifies at-risk students, aligning with safety exceptions.
  • Securly Aware: Monitors online activities for signs of distress, limited to safety responses.
  • Securly Discern: Identifies students needing academic help, covered by educational exceptions.
  • Securly Reveal: Analyzes website and app data to help schools make informed decisions, serving educational purposes.
