How to create Filtering Policies

Within Securly there are several types of policy that can be created. This KB will cover the different types of Policies which can be created.

  1. Custom Policies: This is the standard type of policy in Securly used for day to day filtering.
    • The 'Default Policy' is a standard Custom Policy which cannot be deleted in your Securly configuration.
  2. Take Home Policy: This is a policy which is applied off site when traffic from users are coming from unregistered IP addresses.
  3. Guest Network Policy: This is the policy used to configure the filtering for the Securly Guest Network DNS servers.
  4. IP Policy: This policy is to filter traffic coming from a specific IP address.

Note that Global settings, IP based policies, and Take-Home Policy are not directly assigned to users or OUs.

Creating a Custom Policy

To create a customized policy:

  1. Login to your Securly Filter account.
  2. Navigate to "Policy Editor" and click on "Custom Policy" to create a new policy.
  3. A screen will be displayed where you can select you the policy type you would like to create:
    • The standard options are
      • Custom Policy
      • IP Policy: Note that if you select the IP policy you will be required to assign it an IP address from the list of IP addresses registered with your filtering instance.
          • An IP-based policy takes precedence over user-based policies.
      • Take Home policy: To see the full details on our Take Home Policy please see this KB.
      • Guest Network Policy. To see the full details on our Guest Network Policy please see this KB.

Once you create a policy with the settings you want, go ahead and assign OUs to it. To learn more about assigning OUs, click here
